LISTED PRICE $99.00
This is a beautiful SUPER COLLECTABLE VERY OLD ZUNI turquoise squash blossom that could be possibly made as early as the 1950’s to the 60’s. The unusual mini 7 mm GLOBE SHAPED HANDMADE sterling beads and the fact that a lot of the the turquoise has turned from blue to a beautiful darker rich blue/green color helps me date this squash blossom. It looks like mini version of a squash blossom that I sold a few weeks ago that was possibly a early piece made by Alice Quam. This is the daintiest squash blossom that I have ever listed. The workmanship is so fine, and it’s extremely difficult to cut and set turquoise stones that are so tiny each measures around a 1/16″! Just the naja pendant alone has 53 of these tiny 1/16″ hand cut pieces of turquoise that had to be individually set, that I can’t imagine how much work, skill, and time went into this necklace. The finer the stones and silver work as in this necklace is considered to be more collectable since it requires a highly skilled Artisan to be able to do this quality of work. Not only is the stone work super fine, but this necklace has my favorite globe shaped hand made thick mini beads! (Shown in the 11th photo are the mini 7mm beads on the top compared to the typical 9mm squash blossom bead.) These beads are part of what makes this necklace so valuable. This necklace so far is only the 3rd Zuni squash blossom that I have seen with these hand made mini beads. It is extremely labor intensive to make each of these 134 beads one at a time. that is why in newer pieces you will only find machine made bench beads. These old style beads are much heavier and thicker than machine made beads. And the fact that these beads are all perfectly matched in shape and that the shape of each bead is perfect, tells me that the creator of the necklace was highly skilled. On low quality necklaces the handmade beads tend to be warped and unevenly matched. This is a perfect small squash blossom that is obviously a very high quality piece that’s very collectable and is definitely not a cheap tourist piece. This is a very collectable Zuni Petit Point squash blossom that collectors look for that is much higher quality and older than most of the other Zuni squash blossoms out there. Most of the time the beads are poorly made unattractive and machine made on these Zuni necklaces……which is why I don’t buy them very often because ones like this one are hard to find. The turquoise is probably old Sleeping beauty turquoise that is high grade and natural without any stabilizers…..adding a lot of value to this necklace. It’s obvious when the color of the turquoise has darkened and turned more green that this is natural turquoise and this type of color change makes this necklace more desirable since it takes a very long time for a piece to acquire this beautiful color….just like nice dark patina. I took a lot of close up photos for you to see the beautiful stones and old hand made beads. I also have a photo of 2 pairs of Petit Point Zuni earrings that I have listed to match this necklace perfectly if you need earrings….shown in the 4th photo. This necklace is not signed because it was made before the mid 70’s. The condition of all the stones and the entire necklace is excellent, except that there are 2 stones missing. One is on the naja shown in the 2nd photo and the other missing stone is on a blossom that is 3rd towards the end of the necklace shown in the 10th photo. Since this necklace has a lot of tiny stones you cannot see the missing stones unless you’re searching for it. So here’s a opportunity for you real collectors to buy this masterpiece for a great starting bid price! The beautiful elegant petite sized floral blossom settings with patina were made specially just to show off the most gorgeous turquoise. Even though these blossom are petite…they are thick and solid …..very well made and perfect. This is one of those squash blossoms that will suprize you when you put it on….it’s just so stunning with a lot of presence for a more petite sized necklace. If you look at the 7th photo you will see just how beautiful the old handmade mini blossoms are! These mini blossoms are the most beautiful and perfect ones I have ever seen where the ends of the blossoms are all perfectly curled. As I mentioned before, it’s rare to see these Zuni squash blossom that are truly much older with the rare small handmade beads and in great condition. I collect squash blossoms of all sizes, but these dainty old ones are very special and are much harder to find! You will not be disappointed with this one! This is one of those perfect squash blossoms from the silver work to the stones and the condition is excellent strung with the heaviest gauge foxtail and ready for someone to enjoy! What you see in the photos is truly what you will get. I don’t use special lighting or filters in my photos and take all my photos in natural lighting…simply because I don’t have to enhance anything when I’m selling a great piece of art! I’m super picky and have been taught by the pickiest Native American jeweler to find the best quality authentic Native American jewelry for the best price….so feel confident when you buy anything from me! I want my customers to have a smile and have joy in their hearts when they purchase these beautiful pieces of art and investments from me…..that is what gives me true joy! Weight: 80 GRAMS! Length from end to end: 21 1/2″ Naja measurement : 1 3/4″wide x 2 “tall Blossoms: 1 1/16″ long x 5/8″wide A 7.4%tax will be added to New Mexico residents. I take other forms of payment. LISTED PRICE $575.00
Santo Domingo Pueblo is located in Sandoval County, New Mexico, about 25 miles south of Santa Fe. One of the largest, most populous and most prosperous of the Rio Grande Pueblos, Santo Domingo is located near the original Cerrillos turquoise mines, and the people have a distinguished history of jewelry making. Many collectors around the world prize the jewelry of Santo Domingo for its clean, modern look. In truth, the jewelry produced at Santo Domingo today is very similar to that produced in the Anasazi Pueblos a thousand years ago. “Depression Era” Necklaces originated around the 1930s, but were sold well into the 1960s. Inspired by the prehistoric tab style popular at all the Rio Grande pueblos, these necklaces were produced in a time when traditional materials were too expensive or not available. Consequently, these necklaces were made from found materials and were the first jewelry items for which the Santo Domingo Pueblo became so well-known. Of the materials used to create these necklaces, the beads and background bases for the mosaic were typically bone or shell, the coarsely applied mosaic pieces were cut from phonograph records or old car battery casing, red toothbrush handles and genuine turquoise chips. Gypsum, Bakelite shards and plastic utensils have also been known to be used. Although these necklaces were sold quite inexpensively by the roadside and at Pow Wows, good examples of this type of jewelry have become difficult to find. Highly sought after by avid collectors, a Depression Era Necklace in pristine condition can be sold for well over a thousand dollars in today’s market. There is a primitive quality and charm to these necklaces, and the more colorful and well made examples are expensive and really quite striking. This large Antique Santo Domingo Pueblo Depression Era Necklace is authentic, of Museum Quality and is very striking. Securely strung on the original heavy string this Gorgeous Depression Era necklace features handcrafted 1/4” beads made of aged natural bone-like material interspersed with 8 triangular shaped black tabs with a mosaic overlay of black and red materials separated by turquoise chips. Each mosaic pendant (tab) measures approximately 1” in length by 3/8” at the base and is roughly 2/8” thick. The Stunning Thunderbird Naja also features a beautiful mosaic overlay consisting of a more elaborate and appealing design artistically handcrafted from red, white, and black hard plastic glued to the hard black backing and accented with multi-colored turquoise chips. Thunderbird Naja measures 2-1/8” in length by 1-1/8” at widest point. This wonderful Santo Domingo “folk art” Necklace is 26″ in length from end-to-end, and weighs just over 68 grams. Considering the age, history and construction of this necklace, it is in Superb pre-owned antique condition. Please Note: Due to its age, there is some separation between the glued turquoise chips, and I have identified one small chip that is missing (as can be seen in the photos). A Remarkable conversation piece and a true Collector’s Piece! All sales are final. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me prior to bidding or before the listing ends. All payments must be made through PayPal, and must be received within 5 days of your purchase. No other forms of payment will be accepted. PayPal offers you the ability to pay with your bank account, credit card, or a PayPal credit account. Please Note: Your purchase is covered under PayPal’s Buyer Protection Plan in case of loss.
